Through Service Learning, I have came to realise how much help the needy actually needs. After finding out our beneficiary, I did a basic research on them and saw some photos of their living conditions. I think in our society, there are still many people that require help, even for the necessities to live their daily life. Just a little help will do these needy a great deal as they do not expect much but to just live by the days. If we have the ability to give them assistance, why not? It only mean to spend less or none on things that are not necessary.
The process of Service Learning is still fresh in our minds as we just completed it a week ago. My class' Service Learning is to raise funds through the sale of cupcakes baked by us. It was definitely something new to most of us as we do not have the experience of baking, apart from Home Economic lessons a year ago. We were brought through the baking process by our teachers and given really clear instructions. Baking started after lessons on the day before Teachers' Day. We were initially given 3-4 hours to bake, however as expected, we were unable to complete our tasks in time. Apart from baking, we had to pack the cupcakes nicely too, which caused us to spend too much time. Baking was rather enjoyable and simple as we just had to follow the instructions. Albeit the simple task assigned, we still met with hiccups such as not enough ovens to bake and failure of some cupcakes. Minor setbacks were encountered, but it was not enough to stop us. Then came the major problem, packing. The packing process took up most time and caused a portion of the class to stay behind in school till 8 to barely finish packing.
Such contributions definitely require lots of time and i guess i would not have sufficient time to do so. The possibilities are endless thus i cannot rule out the possibility, but at the moment, not likely. The alternative to contributing to the society will be giving donations or participating in short-term and with less commitment. But i will definitely support and encourage the participation in community involvement as it is an enriching experience while giving back to the society.
